Pre Bariatric Surgery Diet

Pre bariatric surgery diet is included in the instruction guide that will be given to you by your doctor weeks before the surgery and on the day itself. Follow all the instructions in order to make the bariatric surgery less risky.

Results of the bariatric surgery may vary from one person to another. However, success rate is observed for those patients who already start eating healthy prior the bariatric surgery.

The average weeks prior the bariatric surgery is normally eight to twelve weeks and this does not mean that the patient can eating he or she wants. The patient should this waiting time to start eating healthy.

Some surgeons even require their patients to lose at least ten percent of their current weight before the bariatric surgery is performed. Accordingly, those who have lost ten to fifteen pounds prior the surgery had fewer complications.

The ideal pre bariatric surgery diet is high protein and calorie restricted diet as this type of diet can reduce the liver size, which may mean less operating time. This type of diet may also decrease the presence of fat found in the upper abdomen. Lesser fat in the upper abdomen may mean fewer complications to the patient.

Calorie restricted diet will also be the diet that you have to observed after the procedure, for the rest of your life, so it is recommended that as early as now you get used to it.

Protein is also needed by the body before the surgery. The roles of the protein after the bariatric surgery are:

  • Increase level of energy
  • Makes the transition from pre-surgery diet to post op diet much faster

If you have hard time in eating protein-enriched foods, you may ask your doctor about protein supplements which you may take in to supply your protein needs. However, do not take any medications, which your doctor does not prescribe prior the surgery.

There are also other bariatric centers, which offer pre-bariatric diet but do not start on any pre-bariatric diet without the approval of your doctor and surgeon to avoid risks during the surgery itself.

On the Surgery Day

Aside on the pre bariatric diet, other preparations for the surgery itself may also include:

  • On the day itself of the surgery, do not take any food or drinks prior the bariatric surgery. Generally, the fasting period will start midnight before you're surgery.
  • Bring all the medicines that are prescribed to you for any medical health condition. The medicines can be taken even for small sips of water, however, before you take anything medication, it is important that it is done under the supervision of your doctor.

    Do not take any medicines without the knowledge of your doctor since bariatric surgery is a major one.

  • If you have Continuous Positive Airway Pressure machine, you may bring it with you in the hospital.
  • You have to undergo preoperative steps before the surgery is done.
  • Speak with your doctor, surgeon, nurses and anesthesiologist prior the surgery. Remember that you will be under general anesthesia and to control your fear, you may talk to your doctor and anesthesiologist to lessen your fear.
  • An intravenous line will connected to your body in order to keep your hydrated during the surgery.
  • You will be taken to recovery room after the surgery. Normally, the patient can start to move after twenty-four hours after the procedure.
